Should I take a pay cut for a better work-life balance?

The £5,000 cut in this example really costs £16 a week once the commute it removes is counted — and it buys back 227 hours a year. Here are the numbers, then the verdict.

On the top slice of a £45,000 salary you only keep 59p of each pound, so the £5,000 cut costs £2,950 of take-home — and removing the commute hands £2,270 straight back. Net cost: £830 a year, about £16 a week. Each committed hour actually pays more after the cut.

The verdict, both axes

Money axis: −0.31 — a third of a point against, because £830 is small change against a £4,000 meaningful rise. Life axis: 227 hours back scores +2.3, the wellbeing recovery (stress 7→4, evenings gone) scores +1.2 after the confidence discount, and moving to the setup you actually prefer scores +4.0 on flexibility. Life lands at +1.49, and the combined verdict at +0.59: 'slightly greener — switch', pay cut and all.

That is the whole argument of this site in one row of numbers: the cut loses the money axis by a third of a point and wins the life axis by five times that. A salary-only comparison calls this move a £5,000 mistake; pricing the hours and the commute calls it £16 a week for your evenings back.

When a pay cut is a bad idea

Run the same honesty in reverse. If the cheaper job also has weaker pension, vague progression and shakier security, the life axis will not rescue it — rate those truthfully. If your finances have no slack, £16 a week is still £16 a week; the calculator's break-even figure tells you the salary at which the move costs nothing, which is the number to negotiate with.
