What Greener is, how accurate it is, and what happens to your numbers. Short answers here; links to the full working where it matters.
Free, no account·your numbers never leave your browser·every figure traceable
The basics
What is Greener?
A free UK job-change decision tool. It compares your current role with an offer on real take-home pay — income tax, National Insurance, student loans, pension and commute costs — and, separately, on the life side: hours, wellbeing, growth, security and flexibility. The result is a verdict you can audit, weighted by your own priorities, and willing to say “too close to call”.
Is it free?
Yes — completely, with no signup and no paywall. If we ever add paid extras, the core verdict, the life axis and the share links stay free forever.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts and no login. You can use everything straight away, and share a scenario by link without signing up to anything.
What does it actually tell me?
Two things, kept deliberately apart: what the offer really pays after tax — including the things that never show on a payslip, like the employer pension and commute costs (the money axis) — and what it asks of your life (the life axis). It combines them only through an exchange rate you set, and shows both sides beside the combined verdict so the trade-off is never hidden.
Your privacy
Is my salary data private?
Yes — private by architecture, not just by promise. Every calculation runs in your browser. Salaries, ratings and settings are never uploaded, and no salary data ever reaches our servers. A shared link puts your scenario in the part of the URL after the # (the “fragment”), which browsers never send to any server — so a shared scenario travels person-to-person, not through us. More on the privacy page →
Do you sell or share my data?
We can’t sell what we never see. We hold no salary data, so there’s nothing to sell, share or leak — and we say so as a feature, not a footnote.
What about analytics and cookies?
We ask before loading any analytics. Decline — or just ignore the prompt — and nothing third-party loads at all; the site works identically. If you accept, we record only coarse events (a page viewed, a verdict reached), never a figure you typed. The fonts are bundled with the site, so until you accept, Greener makes no third-party requests.
Accuracy & limitations
How accurate is it?
The tax maths is exact to the penny for the cases it models: 2026/27 income tax (England/Wales/NI and Scotland), employee National Insurance, all five student-loan plans, your pension under its real mechanism, and the high-income traps (the £100k allowance taper, the childcare cliff, the Child Benefit charge). The engine re-checks hand-calculated examples live on the page, and every number can be traced to its formula. See every rate · read the methodology.
Which tax years does it cover?
2025/26 and 2026/27. We re-verify every rate against official HMRC and gov.scot sources each April and publish what changed.
Where does it simplify?
It’s an annual decision estimate, not payroll software. It annualises National Insurance (real payroll can differ month to month for uneven bonuses or a mid-year start), treats a bonus as its expected value, and uses the benefit values and ratings you enter. It doesn’t model employer NI, the tapered annual allowance, or salary-sacrifice minimum-wage floors. For your exact payslip, use HMRC or your payroll.
Is this financial advice?
No. Greener is decision support — general information to help you think clearly, not regulated financial or tax advice. For decisions that matter, check the figures against HMRC and talk to a qualified adviser.
I’m self-employed or a contractor — does it work for me?
Partly. Sole-trader income is modelled — trading profit, Class 4 and Class 2 NI, and a personal pension. Limited-company and inside-IR35 contracting aren’t modelled yet; they’re on the roadmap.
Using Greener
How does the life axis work?
You rate each role on stress, enjoyment, security and growth, and set how much each priority matters to you. Greener turns that into a life score shown beside the money — never blended into a single number that hides the trade. Ratings for a job you haven’t started yet are gently discounted by how well you actually know it. The full method →
Can I compare two offers, or a counter-offer?
Today Greener compares your current role against one offer. Comparing two live offers at once (A vs B vs stay) is on the roadmap. There are separate tools for redundancy (take the package or not) and relocation (is it worth moving cities) — same two-axis engine, different decisions.
Can I save or share my result?
Yes — share a link (your scenario travels in the URL, not through us) or download a share-card image. Both are free and need no account. Saving across devices isn’t a feature yet: your scenario stays in this browser until you clear it.
I think a number is wrong — how do I report it?
Please tell us — we take correctness seriously and every report gets a look. Use the feedback button on the calculator, or email info@isthegrassgreener.com.
